چکیده

Measurements of speed of sound and internal friction of a-SiO2 were extended down to <4 mK ssample temperatured in a cryostat shielded with lead against g radiation. We conclude that the sample starts to thermally decouple below 8 mK primarily due to internal heat release. Down to 10 mK, the speed of sound is shown to be compatible with the predictions of the tunneling model, with no evidence seen for a low energy cut-off of the tunnel splitting, contrary to our earlier claims.

Comment on "low temperature acoustic properties of amorphous silica and the tunneling model".

Internal friction and speed of sound were measured on a-SiO2 above 6 mK using a torsional oscillator at 90 kHz, controlling for thermal decoupling, vibrational heating, background losses, and nonlinear effects. Strain amplitudes epsilon(A) = 10(-8) mark the transition between the linear and nonlinear regimes. In the former, agreement with the tunneling model was observed for both internal frict...

Acoustic properties of amorphous silica between 1 and 500 mK.

We have made reliable measurements of the sound velocity delta v/v(0) and internal friction Q(-1) in vitreous silica at 1.03, 3.74, and 14.0 kHz between 1 mK and 0.5 K. In contrast with earlier studies that did not span as wide a temperature and frequency range, our measurements of Q(-1) reveal a crossover (as T decreases) only near 10 mK from the T(3) dependence predicted by the standard tunne...

Correlation Between the Acoustic and Cell Morphology of Polyurethane/Silica Nanocomposite Foams: Effect of Various Proportions of Silica at Low Frequency Region

Introduction: Reducing noise pollution has become an essential issue due to the increase in public concern and also social demands for a better lifestyle. Using sound absorption materials is a preferred method to reduce the noise pollution. Undesirable properties of pure polyurethane such as poor absorption of mechanical energy in narrow frequency ranges can be improved by providing polymeric n...

Feasibility study of silica aerogel nanocomposites application to enhance acoustic properties

Background and Objective: Noise pollution is one of the serious environmental issue. Sound control technologies based on sound absorption and sound insulation are considered as the two widely used methods. Therefore, the aim of this study was to modify silica aerogel nanocomposites to improve its acoustic properties. Materials and Methods:  This applied experimental research involved in examin...

Anomalous Temperature Dependence of the Sound Velocity of Amorphous Silica below 3 mK

The sound speed ΔV/V0 of amorphous silica between 1 and 30 mK was measured using a double paddle oscillator, cut with a laser from a 0.4 mm thick plate of vitreous silica. The oscillator was operated at four of its resonant modes between 610 Hz and 14 kHz. Above 3 mK and up to the maximum of ΔV/V0, the sound speed exhibits the logarithmic temperature dependence predicted by the tunneling model ...
